It can! I always leave out non-fermented feed for the hens to access if they want it!

Does the mash replace other feed?

I've found it easier to use crocks, rather than glass jars. I find the crocks (the insides of crock pots) at second hand stores. Be sure to get the ones that lift out of the heating unit, and if you can find them without the heating unit they are usually a bargain. I tried using layer pellets, but it was mushy and difficult to drain. Now I'm using Scratch and Peck and everyone loves it!

In reply to <a href="https://ohlardy.com/fermented-chicken-feed/#comment-451754">LisaB</a>.

Hi Lisa, I am reading you give your chickens a mix of beans, peas and lentils, soaked...I added today beans (mung and black eye) to the grains I usually ferment for the chickens...then I had a doubt...
is it OK to give the chickens raw (just soaked or fermented ) beans?
I was reading in some other articles that they can be poisonous if not cooked after soaking but sure the article didn't even take into consideration fermenting.
Your comment is the only thing I found mentioning giving chickens soaked beans...
6 years later...how are your chickens? :)

My 4 hens will be 1 year old in july. I started them on herbs when they were about 2 weeks old, along with organic feed. They are doing great. I started them on fermented feed about 3 weeks ago, I add the fresh herbs, garlic, apple cider vinegar to the fermented feed. The girls love it and its all gone at the end of the day. All 4 Hens have given me an eggs a day all through winter and still laying. I'm using less feed also. We will see how things go in the spring but so far so good.
