Fermented Grapefruit Juice

At Oh Lardy we love our fermented foods.  In my house, we go through fermented beverages very quickly!  Our fermented orange juice and fermented apple juice are always a hit.

I was getting a little tired of the sweetness of orange and wanted something different.  A friend suggested I ferment grapefruit juice…so I did.  And let me tell you, the result is amazing!  Fermented grapefruit juice is my new go-to fermented juice!

Fermented foods are full of probiotics and enzymes.  They can help balance the ph level of your gut, heal your intestines, boost your immune system and much more.  You can read all about the benefits of fermented foods here!

  1. I’m allergic to dairy, so would you suggest using the body ecology starter culture for making all fermented foods? I’d love to get the courage up to try but haven’t quite taken the plunge…the juices sound easy and tasty though!

    1. Yes the Body Ecology culture starter will work great. If Amazon is sold out, go to bodyecology.com
For vegetables, you could just use more salt and do a ‘wild ferment’ with no starter. I feel fruit/juices do better with a starter!

  2. Using either kefir or whey or brine leftover fro fermenting vegetables should all work fine, you aren’t going to use but a coupla tablespoonful which won’t. Effect the flavor. Not so
sure about the vodka, I’d hate to lose my earned probiotic flora
    due to the alcohol…

    1. Well, if you ferment it too long it will turn into alcohol. How do you do any of your ferments? Do you let them all go long? You could try a little longer but there will still be some sugar there.

  3. I plan on making this later today, but I have 2 questions…

    1. Pulp or no pulp??
    2. Is the finished product super sour?

    Thanks!!

      1. Thank you! One more question… I only have 1/2 gallon jars. Will it still ferment properly if there’s extra air at the top?

  4. I am so excited to try this. Thank you for the recipe. Is it ok to use a powder probiotic for a starter? If you do use a powder and there are clumps after you shake it – is is still fermenting? Sorry, I am new to all of this!

  5. Hello! I’m eager to try this. Though I’ve never fermented before. So, quick question: do you use special fermenting mason jar lids, or do you simply use regular mason jar lids? If using regular mason jar lids, do you ever worry about the jars exploding due to build up of gases. Thanks!

    1. I just use regular mason jar lids. I do not worry about exploding jars but if that concerns you, you could just burp them each day by lightly opening hte jar to let gases escape!

  6. This is super interesting! I’ve seen many different fermented soda recipes online but this is the first one I’ve seen that uses grapefruit! I love the flavor of grapefruit and I think this would be a wonderful recipe for me to try during summer! Thanks so much for sharing.

  7. Did you find a difference between salt and no salt in this drink personally?

I’ve heard it helps encourage friendly lactic bacteria giving them an advantage.

    What’s youre take on this?

    Thanks 🙂
    Shannon

  8. Have you ever had a mother develop in your grapefruit juice? I think one did in some fairly old juice I had in the fridge and I was wondering if you could use it. Since I have a hard time resisting countertop experiments, I tossed it in some pineapple vinegar I’m making. If anyone has any ideas or warnings, please share!

  9. Love this recipe as I am not a fan of eating grapefruit. During the grapefruit season, people often give the fruit away as they don’t know what to do with them all. I drink it regularly as it is so refreshing. Thank you 🙂
