My husband works with a man who spends as much time as possible in Honduras; however, I'm unsure of the exact location he travels to. I enjoyed your article but I'm curious... The guy he works with told him the people work for very minimal pay (could it have been $15 per day?). If I'm remembering that correctly, how could they afford so much junk food? Is bottled water available? I'm assuming they build their own homes? I'm sorry, I always have 100 questions - makes my family crazy.

My husband is from Honduras. We -with our children- have been there several times. We, too, have done the candy thing for his family and others. Especially the after-the-holidays sales (boxed/bagged chocolates). While they are really big on soda and chips, they weren't as much on candy, so when we brought it, it was a nice treat (which is fine once in a while anyway ;) ). However, things are rapidly changing, as Honduras is quickly stepping into the modernized world. Cell phones, internet, and, yes, American foods. It's funny, a friend of mine visited several years ago and purchased a "Honduran" treat to bring back to the US, but when she returned she flipped the package over and guess what!...made in the USA! LOL

Anyway, they do live primarily on rice, beans, tortillas, various soups, and chicken (sometimes) -and the only chicken we have ever eaten there was killed on property the same day we ate it. On holidays they get into tamale making and do go into a bit more like potato salads and pastries. I don't feel they'd be impressed with nuts, seeds, jerky, or the like. They don't see it the same as we do (if that makes sense).

One tip though, last time my husband visited he tried to generously help out some young boys at the airport monetarily (I think they helped him carry a bag or two). The cabbie who picked him up asked him not to do that, because they become too reliant on hand-outs or easy money, and will lack motivation to get jobs and work for what they need in the future (there are a lot of young adults and adults that ask for handouts or want easy money at the airports already -not sure if you noticed).

Anyway, blessings to you on future trips!
