  • Ginger root
  • Organic cane sugar
  • Filtered water
  • Quart size mason jar

  • 1/4 cup ginger bug
  • 1 quart juice or sweetened tea

How to Make Ginger Bug

  • Add 2 tbsp of grated or finely chopped ginger, 2 tbsp sugar to 2 cups of water in a quart size mason jar. Put lid on jar. Leave at room temperature overnight.
  • Each day add 1 tbsp grated ginger and 1 tbsp of sugar to the mixture.
  • After 5-7 days, the ginger bug should be bubbling away. You will see bubbles and feel pressure on the lid. It will also smell somewhat yeasty.

How to Make Ginger Bug Soda

  • Mix 1/4 cup ginger bug liquid with 1 quart of fruit juice or sweetened tea.
  • Transfer to bottles.
  • Let ferment at room temperature 2-3 days.
  • Transfer to the refrigerator and enjoy!
  • Be careful opening! Ginger bug soda can build a lot of fizz!!!

Notes

Some recipes call for making your ginger bug in a mason jar covered with a cheesecloth. I prefer to use a lid.
You can place your ginger bug in the refrigerator and continue to feed your ginger bug 2 tbsp grated ginger, 2 tbsp sugar and 2 tbsp water every week.
To reactivate the bug, simply bring back to room temperature.
