I'm gonna be honest. I never EVER thought that I would make almond milk at home. I mean, I love raw milk! It is so yummy! And I love making milk kefir for my smoothies! I simply have no room in my life for nut milk. Until now. You see, we started the Whole 30. If you are not familiar with the Whole 30, this program eliminates inflammatory foods for 30 days. All of a sudden, I am making homemade almond milk.
I am a creature of habit. I love my morning smoothie! Normally it contains my homemade milk kefir. But since dairy is a no-no, I have the need for a different kind of “milk” in my smoothie. I knew water was not an option – gross. I also knew that coconut milk would be too rich. So began my search for a suitable almond milk.
The almond milk I was looking for was to have two ingredients. Almonds and water. I found one, from New Barn. Well, it has a “gum” as an ingredient, but it was the best I could find. When I saw that I would be shelling out $4.99 for 28 ounces (who are we kidding, I would probably need two), I wondered if the homemade option was as easy as I had heard.
You guys, it is!
Soak almonds. Drain. Add to blender. Add water. Blend. Strain. Done.
I buy my almonds in bulk from Azure Standard – I had a five pound bag! Boom!
I will say that the first time I made homemade almond milk, I used a cheese cloth to strain it. While that is an option for straining, it was a pain in the booty! My friend shared with me a nut milk bag she found on Amazon and it is AWESOME! Straining the milk is a breeze using this awesome bag!
Using the recipe I am about to share, I can get almost four and a half cups of homemade almond milk! Raw organic almonds can be expensive, but when you buy them in bulk it really brings the cost down. Bottom line is, it is more affordable than store bought for sure!
Do you make your own homemade almond milk? Do you use my method? Do you prefer another ? Share your experience! We would love to hear it!
