Fall is here, and along with it, the desire to make our homes smell cozy and inviting. Years ago I would buy up candles and plug-ins that promised autumn scents! I loved holiday scented EVERYTHING! So, does everyone else! Just look around and you will find pumpkin spiced anything flooding the markets these days!
Now that I am older and wiser, I know that these candles were doing more harm than good in my home. Yes, they may have smelled like fall, but they were also filling the air with lots of other junk! This article from Mercola sums up this craziness much better than I can.
Widely used fragranced products, including those that claim to be “green”, can give off chemicals not listed on the label. Some of these chemicals have been classified as toxic.
Twenty-five commonly used scented products were found to emit an average of 17 chemicals each. A total of 133 different chemicals were detected — nearly a quarter of which are classified as toxic or hazardous under at least one federal law. Only one emitted compound was listed on a product label.
If you look closely, sometimes these products actually have warning labels. I found warning labels on fabric softeners and dryer sheets.
I threw away my candles! What do I do now??
Have no fear. Throwing away your candles should be a mighty breath of fresh air! Ever since I began using essential oils, I realized that I could scent my home AND get therapeutic benefits. But seriously, I want FALL scents in my home. It IS Fall after all!
