Oh Lardy's Guide to Making Bone Broth

You know we love making bone broth a regular part of our lifestyles.  It is so easy to throw some bones, veggies and spices in a stock pot or crock pot and simmer for 24 hours.  And we know we are getting all of the glorious benefits of the broth as well, like gelatin, magnesium, calcium and healthy fats.

Well, I recently got an Instant Pot (any other new ‘pot-heads' here??) and whoa! It has changed my kitchen.  An Instant Pot is basically a multi-functional tool that can act as a saute pan, crock pot among other things but most importantly an easy to use pressure cooker!

I have a stove top pressure cooker that I have been scared to use because I am afraid I am going to blow up my kitchen.  The Instant Pot lets you set it and forget it!  And, I can cook gelatinous bone broth in under 2 hours!!

Not only that but I can cook frozen meat in an hour (yes, last night I made a whole frozen ‘roast' chicken in one hour!!), make soup, steam eggs…so many things!  Believe me, you will be seeing a lot of Instant Pot recipes here from now on!

How do you make bone broth in the Instant Pot?  Just put your normal ingredients for broth: bones, onions, celery, carrots, bay leaf and peppercorns are my staples.  Add 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar and fill with water.  Cook on high pressure for 90-120 minutes.  Let the steam naturally release and voila…bone broth!

  1. I just got a pressure cooker and was wondering if it would speed up my broth making time! Do the bones crumble to dust afterwards, like they do when you cook for 24+ hours on the stove? That’s the only way I know for sure I’ve gotten all the good stuff out of them. 🙂

      1. Excellent news! I’ll give it a whirl this weekend. And great to know about the beef bones, I’m making French onion soup soon and am planning to use beef bones and a couple bags of saved up onion scraps to make the stock. 🙂

  2. I just got my Instant Pot & I love it already! Made pork stew in 35 mins last night – woo hooo!! Curious – how did you do the frozen chicken in 1 hr? Just throw in the chicken – add water & set time? or was there more to it?

    1. yep. pretty much. I added water, onions, celery, etc. Turned it to manual for an hour and let the steam manually release. Total time was about 2 hours (it takes awhile for it to build pressure and then release the pressure) Need to blog about it 😉

  3. I’m dying to make bone broth, or chicken broth, or even mix a bunch of bones. Can you, or do you, use raw chicken…like legs, feet or necks to make your broth, or do you just use cooked carcasses?? Thanks bunches!!

  4. Great broth recipe!
I’m now gonna try to make it before my GF gets home (I’m in the dog house for forgetting our anniversary!!!) This is her favorite so hopefully it will do the trick.
    Keep up the great work!

  5. Clearly the best way to make bone broth! I buy bone in chicken, debone myself then freeze all the bones till I have enough. Rotisserie chicken bones are good too!
